Depending on whom you ask, labeling someone a workaholic is either an insult or a compliment. At any rate, we have all known at least one fellow employee we thought of as a workaholic. That someone might even be you. If you think that people look down on you for it, take heart, because in this ever changing technological age of Internet we now live in, working 24/7 may be the key to lasting success.

Whether you are an executive in a large firm, or one of many employees, performing your job to the best of your ability, is what makes you a valuable employee. For the majority of workers, this is the ultimate goal. Seen as a priceless asset to company bosses, means you have job stability, that there is room for advancement, and the guarantee of incentives and bonuses.

Many companies have successfully moved their businesses online with their own virtual security systems, building either on the existing business, or as a stand-alone Internet business. Workaholics, who happen to be versed in online technology, see this as a dream come true. Since even workaholics take personal days and vacations, they can now do so with peace of mind. This is possible because from anywhere in the world, a workaholic can connect with their employees and the boss, periodically checking on what is happening back at the workplace.

Since the majority of people now spend a large portion of their day online, whether for work or pleasure, it is now gauche for employees to become workaholics. Those who used to pity workaholics will begin to wish they, too, were workaholics, and start modeling after them.

One of the most overlooked means of getting the best out of a computer is for research and putting together “cutting edge” work that can make a real difference in our lives.

 

Computers have come a long way since they were first thought up in the nineteen forties. Then, they were little more than adding machines, then they became storage facilities with data stored for later retrieval, but you had to go to either the same computer or one linked to the mainframe to retrieve it!

 

With the advent of the internet that idea was done away with and we are now only just beginning to unlock the full potential of these machines!

 

Research done anywhere in the world can be stored on a server and accessed by someone on the other side of the globe merely minutes after it has been stored!

 

Search engines have played a key role in this, people can get onto a Search Engine with only an idea of what they want and within minutes they can access so much information that traditionally it would have taken a lifetime to find!

 

Each one of these has dramatically increased the speed at which knowledge is growing, and as a result it is dramatically improving how we use that knowledge!

 

The internet, and in particular the advent and development of search engines has changed the way that we run our lives. Their impact has gone well beyond just the way that business is done, they have changed life in the twenty first century. The challenge for us is to keep up with those changes.

The internet does not have to be the only go-to for information since there are great publications and resources available for students at the library. Children’s librarians love helping students search for topics and books that appeal to their interests.

It is best to locate resources at the library to teach students how to research and pick out information. Show them how to collect notes and record bibliographies. This will help them understand how to site their internet sources. This is a safety concern for every family and setting ground rules can help.

Be A Little Nosy

Asking questions is important, if you notice behaviors out of the ordinary, shifts in behavior using the computer or phone, or other indications something is up, talk to your teenager about it in a calm and collected manner. Confrontations don’t help, but questions can help to head off online bullying, unhealthy relationships, and questionable internet usage. Things to Consider When Using Web Sources

The internet has opened a world of resources for students and researchers. Information is more accessible than ever and can be attained without ever leaving the home computer. Still, this influx of information comes with risks and researchers need to take special care when using sources from the internet.

Know Where, and Where Not, to Look

Wikipedia is the common culprit behind unusable research information because it can be edited by anyone–leaving it vulnerable to misinformation. Still, it has uses. Go to Wikipedia if you have a new topic and you don’t know where to begin. Read through and then check out their sources listed at the bottom of the page, these will often be a great starting point. Common library searches such as LexisNexis and Google Academic can be helpful places to begin working. Some require a subscription, but library computers may allow you to use these resources without a personal account. Google Academic search can help you to pare down the fluff and find the real sources.

Get the Critical Information First

When you look at a new source, identify the author’s name, the year it was published, and the journal, study, or book it appeared in. Having this information first will allow you to make a decision about how relevent and accurate this information is likely to be. Always do this before reading a source and you will save yourself a lot of time. There’s nothing worse than reading 50 pages of a report before you realize that the up-to-date study was current in 1987.

Knowing how to judge research materials is extremely important when performing online research.
